Bridging Cultures: Fostering Intercultural Understanding through Peer Connections

Do you struggle to motivate your students to use the target language for meaningful purposes? Connect them with their peers abroad for guided video exchanges that are tiered by proficiency and topic. See how your students can have real-world conversations and cultural discussions with global peers in a target language and how you can channel their curiosity about the world, create awareness of cultural similarities and differences, and help them develop as global citizens.

Language at Work: Making AAPPL Matter

Assessment is a critical piece that can be strategically leveraged beyond just testing language skills. Learn about ACTFL’s proficiency assessments, new developments with the AAPPL, and how you can use the AAPPL and its data to help make your program matter to learners, parents, teachers, the workforce, and the global community.

Planting Seeds to Bear Fruit: Leveraging the AAPPL in your Classroom

Whether you already administer the AAPPL assessment or are considering its implementation, this workshop will provide strategies for leveraging assessment data to energize instruction and motivate students. After briefly reviewing the major proficiency levels that are assessed on the AAPPL and providing an overview of the assessment format for each mode, the presenter will focus on the seeds that can be planted in daily classroom activities that will lead to greater proficiency. How can teachers best prepare their learners to show what they CAN DO with the language? How can the AAPPL inform curriculum planning, formative assessment, and summative assessment in a language class? How can AAPPL data be used to create long-term programmatic goals and to motivate students to create and achieve their own personalized language goals? Many classroom examples will be shared that can be modified for all levels in all languages.

ImpACTFL Zone: An Overview of ACTFL Assessments: The AAPPL

ACTFL’s Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) evaluates how well learners can apply communication strategies learned in classroom settings in different, yet still familiar, contexts. This session will provide an overview of the AAPPL, including functions and task design for each mode of communication (Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational). Attendees will see some sample tasks and responses and discuss how to apply these principles in the classroom.

Assessing Novice Learners' Intercultural Communicative Competence
